OCP and VTT Electronics

VTT Electronics, a research institute of the Technical Research Centre of Finland, provides contract research services in areas of telecommunications, embedded software, advanced interactive systems and optoelectronics. VTT Electronics has extensive experience in electronics and telecommunications research, and has participated in a number of national and international projects concerning mobile platforms.

The increase of silicon capacity has enabled implementation of application-specific integrated circuits with many small computers on board. In these integrated computer systems, called multi-processor systems-on-chip or networks-on-chip, the functionality of a system is partitioned to a set of communicating application domain-specific computers. The main design challenges are the diversity of the applications and the complexity of the platforms.

A platform based, system-level design approach has been adopted for the development of these embedded systems in various domains including mobile devices. This requires the modeling of applications and the platforms at a high level of abstraction in order to allow the performance evaluation early in the design cycle. The separation of the functional and physical architecture modeling enables creation of reusable platform models.

VTT Electronics has been active in research on methodologies, models and tools related to platform modeling and performance evaluation. The OCP-IP standards, particularly the SystemC transactional channel models, provide the means for building platform models that enable easy reuse of existing resource models due to interoperability, both from VTT’s own model libraries and from third parties. The definitions enable the implementation of a common modeling infrastructure that exploits standard interfaces at multiple abstraction levels of architectures.

OCP-IP is expected to play a role in VTT’s research on computing platform architectures both for communication and application processing systems. The computing platforms are integrated and managed sets of features enable effective implementations of complete product families. The architecture contains both the structure and design methodologies associated with the design and use of platforms.
